Bookmark vs. Link Preview in Notion

Understanding the two different ways Notion handles URLs

Two different features

Notion has two URL preview mechanisms that confuse people:

Bookmark blocks – paste a URL, select “Create bookmark,” Notion’s crawler fetches OG tags and shows a static card. This is what most people mean by “Notion link preview.”

Link Preview integrations – API-powered previews for approved partners (GitHub, Figma, Jira). Richer, interactive, real-time data. Built using the Notion API, not OG tags.

Which one affects you

If you’re a website owner making links look good in Notion: optimize your OG tags for bookmark blocks. Link Preview integrations require a formal API partnership.

If you’re building a Notion integration: register through the developer portal for Link Preview access. This gives you control beyond what OG tags provide.

Why some links look richer than others

Some URLs show interactive previews (Link Preview integration), others show simple cards (bookmark). This depends on whether the service has a Notion integration built – nothing to do with your OG tags being wrong.

When to use each

  • Bookmark blocks – any URL, OG tags, works immediately
  • Link Preview integrations – API partnership required, richer display, real-time
  • Embed blocks – iframe, loads full page, no OG tag dependency
