Image Handling

Image sizes, formats, and the 540px dashboard display constraint

Dashboard display width

Tumblr’s dashboard renders link post cards at a fixed 540px wide on desktop. Everything is scaled to fit that column. Images wider than 540px scale down; narrower images scale up.

Recommended image dimensions

1200 x 630 pixels at roughly 1.91:1. At 2x DPI the effective display is 1080px wide, so 1200px source keeps things sharp. The standard OG image size works well here – no need for a Tumblr-specific image.

Display behavior

The image sits at the top of the link post card, full-width. Very tall images may be cropped. Below the image: title, description, and domain name in a bordered card.

Supported formats

JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. Tumblr is famous for GIF culture, but link post preview images display as static even if the source is animated.

Image URL requirements

The og:image URL must be:

  • Absolute (not relative)
  • Accessible without authentication
  • Served over HTTPS (HTTP may be blocked by mixed-content policies)
  • Not behind cookie-dependent redirects

When no image is provided

Without og:image, Tumblr renders a text-only link card. It’s functional but gets lost on the image-heavy dashboard.
