Image Handling

Image sizes, formats, and display behavior for Snapchat link previews

Recommended image dimensions

1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio). Snapchat is mobile-only, so images display within phone-screen constraints with rounded corners. The image dominates the preview card.

Display behavior

Preview cards show a large image area, bold title below, and domain name at the bottom. Images are scaled to fill the card width and center-cropped. Keep key content centered.

Size considerations

No official limits published, but practical guidelines:

  • Minimum: images under 200px in either dimension may not display
  • Maximum file size: under 5MB for reliable mobile loading
  • Target under 500KB – Snapchat users are exclusively on mobile, often on cellular

Supported formats

JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Animated GIFs show as a static first frame.

Image URL requirements

The og:image (or twitter:image) URL must be:

  • An absolute URL (not relative)
  • Accessible without authentication
  • Served over HTTPS
  • Not behind JavaScript-based redirects

When no image is provided

Snapchat may show a text-only card, but it’s visually weak. On Snapchat’s image-forward UI, a missing OG image is the single biggest factor in a bad-looking preview.
